How / When did this all start?
During the legislative session of the 2013, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation directing the Department of Public Instruction (House Bill 23) to implement digital learning for students and teachers. This legislation was implemented by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction effective July 1, 2017. One direct outcome of this is the requirement of 2.0 CEUs in Digital Learning Competencies (DLCs) for teachers and administrators who renew their license effective June 30, 2019.
Please make sure that ALL of your students are prepared before testing day.
***IF students have a loaner iPad - we WILL have a laptop for them to use on Testing Day. They will pick the laptop up prior to each test each day. We will have a Help Desk Station set up in the 100-200 Intersection.
NCTest Tutorial Day - Monday, January 8th
This webinar was FANTASTIC! It's led by Rob Perez - our new Playposit Rep. He had THE BEST explanation that I have seen yet. It's about 45 minutes and seriously - it covers EVERYTHING that you will need to know about PlayPosit. It's a great review and even covers a few new tricks. Please take time to watch so that you can successfully use this resource in YOUR classroom.
*Playposit IS the secret to making youtube videos work IN Schoology for your students!
Google Chrome & Security Settings Are Your Answer!
Google and copyright holders have recently shutdown many youtube downloader options. I just found a new one that worked today ; )
Youtube has some GREAT resources AND some trashy stuff too. We are bound to protect our students from the trash but that causes issues with our filtering system and frustrations for teachers who want to use it for educational purposes.
My GoTo SS youtube converter is not a great solution anymore. Internet resources constantly change. Right now www.clipconverter.cc IS working. It's super simple. You don't even need to load the youtube video - you can just have a link to the video. Simply paste your link into the search box and select your file download type. I typically select MP4.
*Shoutout to Andrea - ClipConverter.cc is one of her favorite resources - Thanks for sharing!
This year the process is even easier than before ; ) Here are just a few things to REMEMBER.
Freshmen & New Students
Please show these students a little more technology love. Either go over this with your South Block or ask a TRUSTED student to share some details about the Log-In INFO Card and how to take care of the laptops.
Freshmen were SUPPOSED to get NEW bags BUT they are not here yet. : ( We will deploy them with a recycled laptop bag and swap them out when the new ones arrive.
Make SURE that ALL Freshmen get a RED INFO Card in the card holder pocket. Have them write their name on the back of the card to distinguish it from other student's bag.
Please remind students to LEAVE THEIR CHARGERS AT HOME! This is the safest place for them ; )
Tell your students about Self Service. Today is NOT the day for downloading ANYTHING from Self Service. They may need to download Word, PowerPoint, etc. These apps will be available. These apps WILL take a LONG time to download - approximately 30 min EACH. Do not tell your whole class to do it at the same time. That is a recipe for disaster.
ALL of your students WILL NOT have their laptops on Day 1 when they get to your class AND even some of them that do may have dead batteries. Please remember this and not rely on technology in your lessons for the first few days. It's OK to plan to use it - just be mindful of those students who don't have their laptop yet and plan accordingly for them.
Now there IS!
This RSS Technology How To Guidebook is a Google Doc that will continue to evolve as our Technology changes and grows in our county. Woo Hoo! Lot's of resources in 1 link. If I were you I'd save this link as a favorite - right next to your link to my iTech Tips Blog ; )
Topics include: Everything email, Schoology, Gradebook, and even directions to set up email on your phone!
Special Thanks to Corey McNeil (Lead Teacher of Instructional Technology) for creating this RSS Tech Resource.
Adding A Networked Printer
You will need to go ahead and download it. You need it! You can get it here.
What's up with Self Service?
The District is in the process of switching over to a new server for next year. It's our hope that this switch will make everything run smoother but all of this takes time. We are just experiencing a few growing pains as we move through deployment and make the switch. The Microsoft Office suite is NOW available. You should be able to access this from home or school. Simply log-in with your email credentials. Be warned the office programs are BIG files and it will take a LONG time to download. Other programs should be available soon in Self Service.
A few other updates you might need are below:
