Write "I Am" Poems
To facilitate self-esteem building and personal reflection, you can have your students write ‘I am’ poems. I am poems are where students write down positive affirmations about themselves after the words “I am…”
To extend this activity, celebrate National Thesaurus Day in January by having students rewrite this poem using a Thesaurus!

Create a Personal Coat of Arms
Historically heraldic arms were a design belonging to a particular person or group of people. These designs tended to be used by knights and noble men to identify them apart from enemy soldiers. In such traditions these coat of arms were passed from father to son or from wife to daughter.
Over time the use of such crests moved from the military to families, regions and other institutions such as educational institutions. In times past your own family ancestors would have approached a heraldic artist or officer of arms to design your family crest. Your ancestors would have chosen attributes of that family that the officer of arms would depict in the family crest. These attributes would tend have been depicted through various shield designs, colour(s) and symbols, known as ‘charges’, such as animals and plant designs. OR...make a digital coat of arms HERE |

Social emotional learning (SEL) is a methodology that helps students of all ages better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions fully, and demonstrate empathy for others.
- Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Write a narrative about a time when you did something you thought you could not do.

- Create a brand new holiday with its own traditions, rituals, foods, and activities.
- Make your bucket list for the next five years, the next ten years, and for life.
- Think about hospitality in your family. What’s it like to have guests in your house? Do you prefer to have friends to your house or to go to a friend’s house?
- Write about someone who has no enemies. Is it even possible?
- Can honesty honestly be bad? Write about someone, fact or fiction, who gets in trouble for being too truthful.
- You have a chance to go back and completely re-do an event in your life. What is it, and how to you change it? What is the outcome? This can be a real or fictional event.
- Write a poem entitled “Hitchhiking on a Saturday Afternoon.”
- List the most attractive things about your current hometown. Now list the most unattractive things.

September 25th is National One Hit Wonder Day!
One-hit wonders are the songs everyone knows, everyone loves, but nobody can remember the artist. Or if they can, it's only for their most popular hit.
Though the artists who are the top one-hit wonders may not have been able to repeat their success, their songs have left lasting impressions on fans.

What is CNN 10?
A 10-minute news show that appears as a daily digital video on CNN.com that explains global news to a global audience.
The show's priority is to identify stories of international significance and clearly describe why they're making news, who is affected, and how the events fit into a complex, international society. The show maintains a neutral position on controversial topics. It seeks to provide multiple viewpoints, clear illustrations, and general overviews instead of graphic descriptions.
