Tutorial / Laptop Setup CheckThe testing this Spring should be VERY similar to the testing at the end of 1st Semester. Hopefully we will not have as many issues with student laptops but just in case we want to go ahead and have students do the Tutorial on May 18th. It's SUPER important that students follow the directions on the slide and verify/change these settings on their laptops. If not - it's very possible that their actual test start could be delayed AND they could accidentally interrupt the test and lose all their data. Please make sure that ALL of your students are prepared before testing day. Here are the steps you will follow on the May 18th - Day of Tutorial:
THIS is SUPER important! It really needs to be done this week before the District forces you to change it next week. Why not go ahead and do it NOW? I promise NEXT week you will be SO glad that you did. How do I change my e-mail password?
Password Requirements - Details Matter!
VERY IMPORTANT!!!REMEMBER when you change your e-mail password it's actually changing your LDAP credentials. That means your password to Discovery Ed, Achieve, Schoology, AND FILTERING. Basically everything that uses that same password AND you WILL NEED to update this password on ALL your devices - THINK phone, iPad, etc.
BE careful to change this password the first time you attempt to log in to each resource. IF you try the old password too many times it will LOCK you out. If this happens - please let me know and I'll request that we get it unblocked. It's that time again... You are welcome to just go through the slides here. A PDF version is attached AND a copy that just words for those of you who prefer a LIST. BIG Reminders for students - THIS is the year. ALL laptops WILL be re-imaged. ALL files will NOT be there next year. There will NOT be anything we can do to bring them back. Students should plan to make that back-up NOW. They can use their GOOGLE DRIVE / set up a DROPBOX account or purchase an external USB drive. PLEASE emphasize this to your students often - especially JUNIORS. Their Senior project info should be saved in 2 places - just in case. What is Augmented Reality?Augmented Reality is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Check out the following examples of AR.
AR EDUCATION Apps & Resources
Photo Math - It shows you STEPS not just the ANSWER!DAQRI Elements 4D Cubes - Lesson Plans & it's FREE!DAKRI Anatomy 4D - Heart & Body Systems - Free!
Google Cardboard - SO MUCH FUN!*We'd love to find a cool grant for a class set of these AND we are in negotiation with the District to get a class set of iPads for check-out from the Media Center.

One more thingWhen you change your e-mail password it changes your LDAP credentials. I know that sounds like computer speak - basically your LDAP credential IS YOUR LOG-IN INFO for EVERYTHING! EVERY school resource that you use your e-mail password for WILL BE YOUR NEW PASSWORD.
AND you will have to change that password on ALL YOUR DEVICES - think personal computer, smartphone, iPad, etc. AND if you forget your password, you can go back to the same link and RESET it again This year DPI has opted to use a similar but different form of NCTest. This year it's not a regular application but a Google Chrome Add On. The new settings must be done on each laptop while logged in as the testing log-in. It's SUPER important that students change these settings on their laptops. If not - it's very possible that their actual test start will be delayed AND they could accidentally interrupt the test and lose all their data. Please make sure that ALL of your students are prepared before testing day. Here are the steps you will follow on the Preparation Day of Tutorial:
Using Apple TV Air Play in the classroom is an awesome resource - when it works. When it doesn't - it can be a little frustrating. If you are having some issues here are few things you can try...
Watch the Video. *It might take a minute to load so please be patient when you push the play button. Before watching, get comfortable. It's about 9 minutes long of me talking telling you ALL the NEW tech STUFF you REALLY need to know SO get a snack and get comfortable. Remember since it's a video you can PAUSE me as needed. You don't have to take notes unless you really want to. I've attached a pdf version of the slides. **OK - I realize after watching it that I said OK waaaay too many times : ) Sorry! Stuff you REALLY must do after watching: (Links for each task are listed on the green buttons)
*** The New Google Drive Account will be automatically set up by the District for Teachers and Students. It's OK to keep your old Google Account. You can use either one. The advantage of the District one is that YOUR students will have one and this will be a great way for you to communicate with them through a filtered e-mail account. Please remind students to make a BACK UP of all important files before Summer storage - just in case! Students WILL get back their same laptop / case / charger that they turn in. We are NOT planning to re-image this summer but sometimes there are issues when computers are turned OFF for extended periods of time. A back up is ALWAYS a GOOD idea!
Senior laptops will be re-imaged and re-assigned to incoming freshmen. Details on the EOY Collection coming soon! Video created by B Roberson - SRHS Helpdesk 2015 BIG News! We are going to administer the practice tutorial for EOC and NCFinal Exams on April 27 as a test since all exams will be online. IF we all (RSS High Schools) do this at the same time, it will be a good test for “the system” to ensure that everything will be good during exams. That is VERY soon SO we are going to need to do some prep work within the next week to ensure that ALL students will be able to access the tutorial on April 27.
1 - Have ALL your students download Adware Medic (adwaremedic.com) and RUN it - even if they tell you they did it last week. Almost EVERY computer we see is infected with Malware. You can even have students airdrop the Adware Medic application to those students who don’t have it. Adware is the biggest problem we face during testing. 2 - Make sure you visually SEE that the Internet is working on their computer. We have seen MANY computers this week that are not working online at school and I’m concerned that there may be more out there that just have not come in for help. 3 - AND lastly make SURE that they have NCTEST installed on their laptops. Just a reminder - this is a download from Self Service. Most students should have it - but there may be a few that don’t have it. **IF a student has problems with this process, please send them to the help desk for assistance next week. This will help ensure success on Test Day! Malware Basic Information Just a reminder… We are seeing lots of malware on Student and even Teacher laptops. It can happen very innocently. Please be aware that some of these are especially dangerous. MacKeeper will install and cause popups that tell you to call a phone number immediately. NEVER call a phone number - always come to the help desk for support. MacKeeper will cause problems on your computer and then offer to fix your computer for a fee. This also allows the MacKeeper people access to the files on your computer. Pretty sneaky. Please share this info with your students too. For many of them, it’s their first access to technology. This is hands down the biggest tech issue during online testing. Tips for those of you who like to “Fix-It Yourself” Adware Medic is a donation (free) download application that will fix many issues. You can just download it and run it as needed to clean most malware from your machine. Some programs need to be trashed or un-installed. You will need to go to your Applications folder to see if these are installed. If you find them, just drag them to the trash. You may be prompted to un-install. Just follow the prompts. These are the most common offenders. 1. MacKeeper 2. ZipCloud 3. Search Protect 4. Install Mac 5. Tune Up My Mac One more tip… Often these malware programs will change your homepage so that when you open a browser it immediately connects to their site. VERY sneaky. You can look at your browser prefs to see your homepage settings. It’s an easy fix. ALL students participating in an online EOC will need to follow these directions to install NCTEST and edit their screen saver settings BEFORE taking the test. It is HIGHLY advised that you walk your students through this install BEFORE the Christmas break. Please have students RESTART their computers again before the actual test to maximize the efficiency of their laptops.

What does Adware have to do with Discovery Education?Adware is not a virus but it can act like one and MOST importantly for us - it can totally block a Discovery Ed test! How do I fix it for Safari?Basically you have to uninstall the adware "extensions" in EACH browser. Then reset the browser. Safari is the easiest to fix. Just follow the directions below:
MOST common Discovery Ed mistake...PLEASE remember you can't just Google "Discovery Education." It WILL NOT work! We all MUST use www.rss.discoveryeducation.com. It works EVERY time ; )
BEFORE you create your Apple ID account, please be sure that you have an email account that you can use to set up your Apple ID Account with. IF you don't already have one a gmail is your BEST option!
**It is VERY important when you are creating a free Apple ID, that you choose a FREE app from the Education store. Please be sure that you follow the directions below. 1 - Open iTunes 2 - Go to the iTunes store 3 - In the search box at the top right of the window, search for Gaggle. ***Make sure the word Education shows under the Gaggle icon. 4 - Click Free 5 - In the window that opens, click Create Apple ID 6 - Agree to Apple's Terms and Conditions and continue 7 - Enter your Apple ID information (email address, password, and security information) 8 - Optional - enter a rescue email, which is a second email account that you associate with this Apple ID account in case you forget your original email information or it changes. A VERY good idea!!! 9 - Click Continue 10 - You will see a screen that asks for payment information. 11 - Make sure that you choose NONE. Then finish creating your Apple ID 12 - Apple will send a verification email to the email account that you used to set up your Apple ID. 13 - Log in to your email and follow the steps to verify your new Apple ID account. ***Note- You can only use an email address once, so if you have created an Apple ID in the past with an email account, you will need to create a new one for this new Apple ID. *** IF you attempted to set up an account but stopped at the payment part - the other account is just not completely set-up. You can (WITH A PARENT/GUARDIAN) enter a credit card - Save the changes - and then DELETE the credit card and Save the changes. Did you ever wonder why a pdf automatically opens in Adobe Reader and you wish it was Preview? or maybe you like Adobe Reader better... there's a quick fix.
Trust me - this is lesson you don't want to learn the hard way! All technology, even new computers eventually fail. It's the nature of electronics. If you have not already done so - you should schedule a time each week to back up your files. I know it's not fun or even convenient, but it's essential. You have several free cloud based options: iCloud, Dropbox, and Google Drive - just to name a few. You may even want to purchase a large usb flash drive or an external hard drive specifically for this purpose. If you want to get serious you can even use Time Machine. The important thing is - Just Do It! Just in case... this video can walk you through creating a basic back-up. Please help SPREAD the news! Tell ALL your students how important this is! |
